AC generators are also known as alternators
An AC generator is a machine that generates alternating current electricity through the properties of magnetism. AC generators are also known as alternators. Alternating current is electrical current that continually switches directions or continually switches between positive and negative.There are five parts to a basic AC generator: a magnetic field, an armature, slips rings, brushes and a resistive load.
Magnetic Field
The magnetic field is normally generated by an electromagnet. A magnetic field will produce a flow of electricity as the electrons flow to the negative side of the magnet. The size and strength of the magnet will determine the voltage produced by the generator.
An armature is made of electrically conducive wires that are wound in loops. The armature rotates through the magnetic field or the electromagnet rotates around the armature. As the wires move through the magnetic field, the flow of the electricity switches directions, or alternates.
Slip rings are circular rings, similar to a tube, that are connected to the armature and rotate with it, if it is rotating.
Brushes are in contact with the slip rings and the resistive load. Their job is to conduct the electricity from the slip rings to the load.
The resistive load is any type of machine that is using the AC electricity as a power source. An electrical appliance or an electronic device are examples of things that can be used as a resistive load.
